Mais, après la mort de Gustave, la Suède ressentit le contre-coup de ce malheur. La perte de la bataille de Nordlingen (1634) lui fit un double tort, en ce que cette défaite les mit dans la dépendance de la France, qui, jusque-là, avait été seulement l'alliée des Suédois, tandis que Richelieu voyait bien qu'il devenait presque leur protecteur.... Oxenstiern vint rendre hommage, dans Compiègne, à l'orgueilleux cardinal, qui devint, de ce moment, le chef des affaires en Allemagne, tandis qu'Oxenstiern l'avait été jusque là.... Mais le chancelier suédois, pour être le plus habile homme d'Etat de son temps, n'était pas homme de guerre; pour tout maintenir, il aurait fallu, encore quelques années, le bras de son vaillant maître....

English translation (by anonymous translator):

The death of Gustavus Adolphus was a real calamity to Sweden. The loss of the battle of Nordlingen, in 1634, placed that country under the dependance of its former ally, France. Richelieu now realized his ambitious project of wholly directing the politics of Germany, hitherto swayed by the councils of the virtuous Oxienstiern [sic], who, notwithstanding his talents as a statesman, did not possess the requisites of a warrior. The powerful arm of his valiant master would have been necessary for some years longer to have consolidated the influence his genius had exercised over the affairs of the North. Oxienstiern completed the triumph of the proud and wily prelate, by his presence at Compiegne; thus doing homage, as it were, to the supremacy of Richelieu.
