Vous m'avez donné la meilleure nouvelle du monde, en m'annonçant l'heureuse naissance du Prince de Suède. Ne manquez pas d'aller féliciter le Roi & les Reines de ma part, les assurant que je le ferai plus particuliérement quand j'aurai reçu la part qu'ils vous en donneront, & que je suppose qui ne tardera guéres. Ce Prince est né sous une constellation si heureuse, qu'à moins qu'il ne donne un démenti aux Astres, il sera un brave, un sage, & un très-heureux Prince, & j'espére que la Suède sera un jour très-heureuse & glorieuse sous son Régne. Je me flatte de cette espérance; & quoique cela n'arrive pas de mon vivant, je ne laisse pas d'avoir de la joie de cette espérance. Faites votre devoir pour moi en cette occasion, & ajoutez ce service à tant d'autres que vous me rendez, d'assurer Leurs Majestés de ma joie en des termes qui leur marquent toute la tendresse de mon amitié. Je vous enverrai l'ordinaire prochain toutes vos Dépêches sur les affaires qui vous concernent, aussi-bien que mes ordres, en réponse à vos Lettres. Ayez patience, & vous serez satisfait de moi, car vous le méritez.

Swedish translation (my own):

Rom, den 1 augusti 1682.

Ni har givit mig den bästa nyheten i världen genom att tillkännage för mig den lyckliga födelsen av prinsen av Sverige. Underlåt inte att gå och gratulera konungen och drottningarna å mina vägnar, och försäkra dem att jag kommer att göra det mer särskilt när jag har fått den del som de kommer att ge Er, och som jag förmodar inte kommer att dröja på länge. Denne fursten föddes under en så lycklig konstellation att han, om han inte ger stjärnorna ett förnekande, kommer att bli en modig, klok och mycket lycklig furste, och jag hoppas att Sverige en dag kommer att vara mycket lyckligt och härligt under hans regering. Jag smickrar mig med detta hopp; och även om detta inte kommer att ske under min livstid, kan jag inte underlåta att glädjas över detta hopp. Gör Er plikt för mig vid detta tillfälle och lägg denna tjänst till så många andra som Ni ger mig, för att försäkra Deras Majestäter om min glädje i termer som visar dem all ömhet i min vänskap. Jag kommer att sända Er nästa postdag alla Era depescher om de ärenden som rör Er, samt mina beställningar som svar på Era brev. Ha tålamod, och Ni kommer att bli nöjd med mig, ty Ni förtjänar det.

English translation (my own):

Rome, August 1, 1682.

You have given me the best news in the world in announcing to me the happy birth of the Prince of Sweden. Do not fail to go and congratulate the King and the queens on my behalf, assuring them that I will do it more particularly when I have received the share they will give you, and which I suppose will not be long in coming. This prince was born under such a happy constellation that, unless he gives a denial to the stars, he will be a brave, wise, and very happy prince, and I hope that Sweden will one day be very happy and glorious under his reign. I flatter myself with this hope; and although this will not happen during my lifetime, I do not fail to have joy in this hope. Do your duty for me on this occasion, and add this service to so many others that you render me, to assure Their Majesties of my joy in terms which show them all the tenderness of my friendship. I will send you the next post day all your despatches on the affairs which concern you, as well as my orders in reply to your letters. Have patience, and you will be satisfied with me, because you deserve it.

Notes: Prince Karl had been born on June 17/27, 1682. He took after Kristina in that he was born covered in a caul (the amniotic membrane), which would have been seen as a good omen. When Karl was baptised on July 12/22, Kristina, although absent, became his godmother along with Maria Amalia of Courland and Princess Sophia Dorothea of Holstein.

Interesting how Kristina seemed to know that she/he/they would not live to see the boy become king. It came true in 1697, eight years after Kristina's death.
