Monsieur mon Cousin, on a tant de confiance en l'amitié que V. A. a pour moi, qu'on s'est flatté que mes offices ne seroient pas inutiles auprès de vous en faveur du malheureux Comte d'Adda, que je crois en sûreté, s'il est, comme on le dit, en votre pouvoir; & je m'assure que ma recommandation lui sera inutile, puisque votre générosité l'aura déjà épargné. Cependant si ma considération peut donner quelque poids pour obtenir sa grace de V. A. je vous en aurai la derniére obligation. S'il m'eût cru, il ne se seroit pas chargé d'un emploi si dangereux; mais n'ayant fait d'autre crime que celui d'avoir obéi à son Prince, il me semble qu'il mérite la grace que je vous demande de tout mon cœur pour lui, vous assurant que je compterai les honnêtetés que vous lui ferez comme étant faites à moi-même. Je vous demande la même grace pour tous les Catholiques-Romains. Ce petit troupeau ne peut troubler vos desseins. Ils seront trop heureux de vivre. Vous n'avez rien à craindre de leur foiblesse, tout vous est soumis. Tout applaudira à votre gloire & votre fortune. Je suis fâchée qu'elles coûtent trop cher à ceux dont les malheurs méritent tant de compassion. Ne vous en offensez pas. On ne laisse pas de vous estimer, & de vous admirer. Et moi qui vous demande grace pour tant d'illustres malheureux, je vous demande plus que jamais la continuation de votre amitié, vous assurant que je suis,

My lord cousin,
One has so much confidence in the friendship that Your Highness has for me that one has flattered oneself that my services would not be useless with you in favour of the unfortunate Count d'Adda, whom I believe to be safe, if it is, as they say, in your power; and I assure myself that my recommendation will be useless to him, as your generosity will have already spared him. However, if my consideration can give some weight to obtaining Your Highness' pardon, I shall have the greatest obligation to you. If he had believed me, he would not have taken on such a dangerous employ; but, him having committed no other crime than that of having obeyed his prince, it seems to me that he deserves the pardon that I ask of you with all my heart for him, assuring you that I will count the honesty that you will do to him as being done to myself. I ask you the same grace for all Roman Catholics. This little herd cannot disturb your plans. They will be only too happy to live. You have nothing to fear from their weakness, everything is subject to you. All will applaud your glory and your fortune. I am sorry that they cost too much to those whose misfortunes deserve so much compassion. Do not be offended at it. One does not cease to esteem you and admire you. Note: In accordance with the nobility's ideals in the early modern era, kings and queens considered themselves siblings; when talking to someone of a lower rank than their own, they would refer to that person as "my cousin", regardless of whether or not they were related.
