The letter:
Rome ce 14 Mars 1682.
Mr. d'Olivekrans. Il court ici un Testament fait par le Roi de Suéde, étant dans l'extrêmité de sa vie, que je crois fait à plaisir par quelqu'un qui aura voulu faire tort à sa réputation. Je n'ai jamais rien vû de si ridicule que ce testament. La politique en est nouvelle, & celui qui en est l'auteur peut se vanter d'avoir trouvé une nouvelle méthode de gouverner les peuples. C'est une belle maniére de recommander un Prince, qui est encore dans le ventre de sa Mère, que de priver en mourant un Sénat entier de leurs honneurs & d'ôter à toute la Noblesse leurs biens. Peut-on espérer ou se flater qu'on sera obéi quand on sera mort après une telle conduite. Mais quoiqu'il en soit, je veux espérer qu'on n'oubliera pas, que la Couronne qu'on posséde est un don d'une pure grace, qui ne fut accordée qu'au Roi Charles-Gustave & à ses légitimes Descendans, par Moi & par la Suède, qui y donna son consentement, & en cas que le présent Roi Charles vint à manquer, la Suède ne peut, sans être criminelle envers Dieu & envers Moi, choisir d'autres Rois, ni d'autres Reines, que mes droits ne soient mis en sûreté. Faites souvenir la Suède de son devoir, & persuadez lui bien, que tant que je vivrai, je souhaiterai sa prospérité & son bonheur, & si l'on vouloit m'écouter, en cas d'un interrègne, ou d'une minorité, on éprouveroit avec avantage la sincérité de mes sentimens. Au moins la Suède est obligée de ne procéder pas à une nouvelle élection, sans que mes droits soïent en leur entiére sûreté, c'est uniquement en les conservant qu'elle trouvera sa gloire & sa sûreté. Protestez en tems & lieu contre tout ce qui pourroit être fait au préjudice de mes droits & obtenez du moins qu'on ne prenne aucune résolution sans m'écouter, même en cas d'une minorité d'un Prince. Je me repose sur votre zèle & fidélité, de laquelle le Marquis me répond pour vous, m'assurant que vous ferez votre devoir. Je vous envoïe une copie de ce ridicule testament. Ditez-moi la vérité de ce qui en est, & ne négligez rien. Je consens à la grace que le Comte Oxenstierna me demande, mais à condition qu'il s'oblige d'être de mon parti, & de prendre toûjours en Suède la défense de mes droits. Si le malheur de la mort du Roi arrivoit, ne manquez-pas de m'en avertir aussitôt. Il y a des gens qui disent que la Princesse ne vivra pas. Il en sera ce qu'il plaira à Dieu, & je suis de ceux qui ne croïent pas aux prédictions. Si celles qu'on publie sont véritables, écrivez-moi tout ce que vous en savez, car quoique je n'y croïe pas, ma curiosité veut pourtant tout savoir. Adieu.

Här är ett testamente gjort av Sveriges Kung, varande vid slutet av sitt liv, vilket jag tror gjordes med nöje av någon som kommer att ha velat skada hans rykte. Jag har aldrig sett något så löjligt som det här kommer. Politiken är ny, och den som är författare kan skryta med att ha funnit en ny metod för att styra folk. Det är ett gott sätt att rekommendera en prins, som ännu är i sin mors mage, att beröva ett helt Råd deras ära genom att dö och att beröva all adel deras egendom. Kan vi hoppas eller smickra oss själva att vi kommer att bli lydda när vi är döda efter ett sådant beteende? Men hur som helst, jag vill hoppas att vi inte glömma att den krona vi äga är en ren nådegåva, som endast tillerkändes kung Karl Gustav och hans legitima ättlingar, av mig och av Sverige, som gav sitt samtycke, och i händelse av att den nuvarande kung Karl skulle misslyckas, kan Sverige inte utan att vara brottsligt mot Gud och mot mig välja andra kungar, ej heller andra drottningar, må mina rättigheter ej säkras. Påminn Sverige om dess plikt, och övertyga det väl, att så länge jag lever, vill jag önska det välstånd och dess lycka, och om man vill lyssna på mig, i händelse av interregnum eller av en minoritet, skulle man testa med fördel mina känslors uppriktighet. Åtminstone är Sverige skyldigt att inte gå vidare till ett nyval, utan att mina rättigheter är i hela deras säkerhet, det är bara genom att bevara dem som hon kommer att finna sin ära och sin trygghet. Protestera i sinom tid mot allt som skulle kunna göras till skada för mina rättigheter och åtminstone se till att ingen resolution fattas utan att lyssna på mig, även när det gäller en minoritet av en prins. Jag litar på Er iver och trohet, för vilken markisen svarar mig för Er, försäkrar mig att Ni kommer att göra Er plikt. Jag skickar Er en kopia av detta löjliga testamente. Berätta sanningen om det, och förbise ingenting. Jag samtycker till den nåd som greve Oxenstierna ber mig, men på villkor: att han förpliktar sig att vara av mitt parti och alltid att försvara mina rättigheter i Sverige. Om olyckan av Kungens död skulle komma, underlåt inte att genast meddela mig. Det finns människor som säger att prinsessan inte kommer att leva. Det blir som Gud vill, och jag är en av dem som inte tror på förutsägelser. Om de vi publicerar är äkta, skriv till mig allt Ni vet om dem, ty även om jag inte tror på dem, vill min nyfikenhet veta allt. Farväl.

Here is a testament made by the King of Sweden, being at the end of his life, which I believe was made with pleasure by someone who will have wanted to damage his reputation. I have never seen anything so ridiculous as this will. The policy is new, and whoever is the author can boast of having found a new method of governing peoples. It is a fine way to recommend a prince, who is still in his mother's womb, to deprive an entire Senate of their honours by dying and to deprive all the nobility of their property. Can we hope or flatter ourselves that we will be obeyed when we are dead after such conduct? But whatever the case, I want to hope that we will not forget that the Crown we possess is a gift of pure grace, which was only granted to King Karl Gustav and his legitimate descendants, by me and by Sweden, which gave its consent, and in the event that the present King Karl should fail, Sweden cannot, without being criminal towards God and towards me, choose other kings, nor other queens, may my rights not be secured.
