The letter (translated into French from the original Italian by Father Burnichon):

Je vous envoie sous ce pli une lettre pour Don Téophile, laquelle servira à vous accréditer auprès de lui. Une fois arrivés en Suède, vous pourrez y mettre l'adresse et un cachet quelconque, selon que vous le jugerez à propos. Je ne suis pas sans inquiétude au sujet des lettres de créance qu'il vous faudra exhiber à Hambourg, pour toucher l'argent nécessaire au reste du voyage. Je crois qu'il vous sera difficile de le faire sans éveiller les soupçons que vous voudriez éviter. Aussi, tout bien considéré, le meilleur à mon avis sera de se confier en Dieu, espérant que le banquier sur lequel vous avez des lettres de change sera «un bon israélite» in quo dolus non est. Le signor Apollonio (le P. Macédo) lui écrit de nouveau, pour le cas où il ferait difficulté de vous donner de l'argent, de vous remettre la chaîne déposée chez lui. Je supplie le Seigneur de vous accompagner dans le voyage et me recommande à vos prières.

Jag sänder Er under detta omslag ett brev till don Teofilo, som kommer att tjäna till att ackreditera Er hos honom. När Ni väl anländer till Sverige kan Ni sätta adressen och eventuell stämpel på den som Ni vill. Jag är inte utan oro över de meriter som Ni måste visa i Hamburg för att få de pengar som behövs för resten av resan. Jag tror att det kommer att vara svårt för Er att göra det utan att väcka de misstankar Ni skulle vilja undvika. Så, allt väl övervägt, det bästa enligt min åsikt kommer att vara att lita på Gud och hoppas att bankiren som Ni har växlar på kommer att vara »en god israelit« in quo dolus non est. Signor Apollonio (fader Macedo) skriver till honom igen, i fall han har svårt att ge dig pengar, för att ge Er kedjan som deponerats hos honom.
