Residenten Spiering haver fuller nyligen givit sin avis hit över om berörde Waldau; håller före bäst vara att emedan han inte finner sina bekvämligheter att lära i Amsterdam, där han ännu vistas, och för sina unga år icke nu kan sändas åt Italien eller andra främmande land, det han på ett par år skickades till Antwerpen, varest förnämliga konterfejare skola finnas, i synnerhet en Jordaen[s] benämnd, så emedan resid[ent] Spiering haver sitt stadiga tillhåll i Haag och kan icke hava så god och bekväm lägenhet att beställa om Waldaus exercitier.
Men I, som äro i Amsterdam och hava både Waldau såväl som residenten Michel le Blon vid handen, med vilken ock Spiering häröver härtill flitigt korresponderat haver, kunna det bättre uträtta, varföre have Vi velat Eder pålägga och befalla att I beställe hos bemälde le Blon det merbemälde Waldau bliver hos samme Jordaen[s] uti konterfejareexercitierna på tu eller tre års tid antagen, således att han honom väl informerar och vad honom ännu i konstens fundament felar fullkomligen undervisar, i små, medelmåttiga så ock stora konterfej, historier, landskap samt andra rekvisiter, eftersom ock konsten mest är att läras av goda och rätta originalier, på det han hela theoriam därav grundligen fattar och begriper.
Vad han då sin mästare årligen därföre giva skall, att det i tid med honom Jordaen[s] slutet bliver vad han för sin kost, kammare och allt annat, såväl som det han till sin lära betarver, det måste I ock ackordera om. Men vad han i Amsterdam, sedan han sin förre mästare Sandrart blev kvitt, hos Franz von Wachtendonk emellertid förtärt och eljest till sina tarver använt haver, däröver kunna I med Spiering kommunicera och av honom förvänta där betalningen, jämväl ock vad han eljest i förstone kan behöva tillkomma in mad hos Jordaen[s] i Antwerpen.

Our favour, etc. We do not want to withhold from you, Harald Appelboom, that some time ago We recommended to Resident Spiering Our cooking master's son, named Georg Waldau, to learn the art of painting and portraiture out there in Holland. We also learn that he is making good progress there, and We therefore would gladly see him continue in that, in order that he may learn the same art from the foundation and in the future do Us some service thereby.
Resident Spiering has recently given his opinion here about the said Waldau; he thinks that because he does not find it comfortable studying in Amsterdam, where he still resides, and as, because of his young age, he cannot now be sent to Italy or other foreign countries, he was sent for a couple of years to Antwerp, where distinguished portraitists are to be found, particularly one named Jordaens, since Resident Spiering has his permanent residence in The Hague and cannot have such a good and convenient occasion to order anything about Waldau's exercises.
But you, who are in Amsterdam and have both Waldau and the resident Michel le Blon at hand, with whom Spiering has also diligently corresponded on this subject, can do it better, wherefore We have wanted to impose and command you to order from the said le Blon that the said Waldau be accepted with the same Jordaens in the portrait exercises for two or three years' time, so that he informs him well and teaches him completely what he still lacks in the foundations of the art, in small, medium and large portraits, histories, landscapes and other requisites, for the art is also best learned from good and correct originals, so that he thoroughly grasps and comprehends the entire theory thereof.
What he shall then give his master annually, so that, in time, the end will be that with Jordaens he will have what he needs for his food, chamber and everything else, as well as what he needs for his learning, you must also agree on. But as for what he has consumed and otherwise used for his needs in Amsterdam, after he got rid of his former master Sandrart, with Franz von Wachtendonk, you can communicate with Spiering about it and expect payment from him, as well as what else he may at first need to bring in food with Jordaens in Antwerp.
We have also written to Spiering about it, that he not fail you or Waldau herein; for the rest, let it be recommended to you that the said Waldau safely undertakes his journey, and admonish him to beware of the Papist religion as well as of other inconveniences that may harm him. The work Waldau completes under his master can be sent here at any time and as soon as possible. We have confidence in you herein; and We commend you, etc.

Notes: Georg Waldau (1626-1674) was a Swedish painter. He was the son of the court trumpeter Vilhelm Waldau (died 1654) and Kristina's wetnurse Anna von der Linde (died 1679), and his stepfather was the court cooking master Dietrich Mein. There are no surviving documents about Georg's first marriage, and it is not known who his first wife was, but when he remarried in around 1668 it was to Catharina Gröning, who remarried after his death to Henrik Schütz (1650-1701) in 1675, and his [Georg's] children with her were Jörgen Fredrik Waldau (born 1658), Anna Maria Waldau (born 1666), and Johan Jacob Waldau (1671-1743). When they were babies Georg and Kristina were nursed together, they grew up together as childhood friends, and he came to enjoy her favour and benevolence to a great degree.
Jacob Jordaens (1593-1648) was a Flemish painter, draughtsman and designer of tapestries and prints. He was a prolific artist who created biblical, mythological and allegorical compositions, genre scenes, landscapes, illustrations of Flemish sayings and portraits. After the deaths of Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641), he became the leading Flemish painter of his time. Unlike his contemporaries, he never travelled abroad to study Antique and Italian painting and, other than a few trips to other places in the Low Countries, he lived in Antwerp all his life. He was mostly indifferent to the courtly aspirations of Rubens and van Dyck, and this attitude showed in his art through a lack of idealistic treatment in contrast to that of said contemporaries. However, late in his career he did get commissions from Kristina, King Charles I of England (1600-1649), and the stadtholder class of the Dutch Republic, with his usual patrons being the wealthy bourgeoisie and local churches.
Sandrart = Joachim von Sandrart (1606-1688), a German Baroque art historian and painter, active in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age. He is most significant for Die Teutsche Academie, his collection of biographies of Dutch and German artists, published between 1675 and 1680.
