Till nådigast svar och underrättelse om Vår mening och ändtliga resolution häröver, förnimme Vi fast gärna att traktaten uti dessa terminis råkade är; tacke Gud, som Våra consilia och Eder försiktiga negociation så vida feliciterat och bivånat haver.

Nu skrevo Vi Eder fuller till den 23 juli, låtandes Eder förstå att Vi för några särdeles skäl och konsiderationers skull (dem Vi akte onödigt här att upprepa) ansågo då för gott och ett bekvämt expedient att I den saken om stift Bremens restitution skulle remittera till traktaten i Tyskland och därmed undleda Eder ifrån mediatorens och de danskas trägna anhållande över detta ärende. Vore ock fuller Oss och Riket, som I själva väl veten, vid denna tids tillstånd icke mindre högnödigt än som fördelaktigt om vi uti en fullkomlig possession av förberörda stift förbliva måtte, åtminstone så länge vi stå uti det tyska kriget.

Men såsom Vi förmärkandes emellertid av Eder sedermera skrivelse av den 30 juli vad för nya diffikulteter Eder över denna sak tillväxa ville och hos Oss överläggandes att där Vi inte skulle vilja härutinnan ackommodera Oss mediatorens gjorda förslag eller kungens i Danmarks son med något gratificera, skulle Vi då icke allenast lada Oss alla människors blamer på, utan ock han söke alla medel att sätta sig med praktiker i stiftet igen, och Vi alltså alltid have av honom en viss fiende att förvänta.

Alltså och emedan Oss nu är uti allt annat skedd satisfaktion och diffikulteten nu allenast häruti sticker, ty have Vi till att visa världen att oss om stift Bremen inte är så stort tillgörandes och att Vi därföre inte vilje föra kriget, utan estimere freden vara Oss och Vårt Rike nyttigare, eftersom Vi have skrivit Eder den 2 augusti till vad Vår ändtliga mening var om förberörda stift Bremens restitution, nämligen att I omsider, seendes Eder inte vidare kunna komma, skulle resolvera Oss och Kronan de förnämsta befästningar i stiftet med så mycket land därunder som Våra garnisoner på samma befästningarna kunna uppehållas med och resten sedan bispen efter sluten traktat restituera, med den kondition som däri förmält är, vid vilken resolution Vi ock nu låte bevända, görandes Oss endels de tankar att I till äventyrs hava därpå slutit traktaten förrän som detta Vårt brev Eder tillhandakommer.

Då tilltro Vi Eder nådigst att I efter alla sakers överläggande fatta det konsilium som Oss och Vår Stat kan vara tilldrägligast, slutandes sedan därpå i Herrens namn traktaten. Detta allenast faller Oss nu in härvid att påminna att efter kungen i Danmark, som bliver av Oss gratificerad med restitutionen av stiftet, det I fördenskull söke med flit det han och kungen i Danmark därmed sig obligere att låta Oss bekomma allt det tyska och främmande folket som de hava brukat emot oss uti detta kriget och utan tvivel nu avdankat bliver, så att det icke må komma i kejsarens eller under Våra fienders tjänst; och vele härmed, etc.

Notre faveur spéciale, etc. Nous avons reçu, féals hommes et commissaires au traité de paix danois, votre lettre d'hier matin avec Claude Brorsson Rålamb, datée de Söderåkra le 1er du courant; dans laquelle vous déclarez d'abord que vous avez rencontré la veille les commissaires danois à Brömsebro et que là, par l'intermédiaire du médiateur, vous avez corrigé leur décret pris selon votre conception, puis aussi comment à la même occasion de tels discours sur l'évêché de Brême ont eu lieu, que vous n'avez pas été beaucoup pour dissuader les commissaires danois de ne pas être résolus à conclure la paix à moins que le fils du roi et ledit évêché n'y soient inclus.

Et 3., qu'après que tout le reste qui a été disputé entre Nous et le Danemark, à la fois sur le cours libre et sans perturbation du commerce et de la navigation à travers le Sund et le Belt, ainsi que sur la satisfaction et l'assurance, est clair et convenu, et que la difficulté ne se pose maintenant que dans l'évêché de Brême, vous désirez que Nous vous instruisions sur la manière dont Nous voulons qu'elle soit traitée, que vous suiviez Notre ordre précédent et strictement au plus haut degré, ou que vous permettiez également que la restitution de l'évêché se déroule conformément à la proposition du médiateur.

Pour une réponse très gracieuse et des informations sur Notre opinion et Notre résolution finale sur cette question, Nous apprenons en effet avec joie que le traité est arrivé à ces termes; Nous remercions Dieu, qui a jusqu'ici félicité et aidé Nos conseils et vos négociations prudentes.

Nous vous avons écrit le 23 juillet pour vous faire savoir que, pour des raisons et considérations particulières (qu'il Nous paraît inutile de répéter ici), Nous estimions opportun de renvoyer l'affaire de la restitution de l'évêché de Brême au traité d'Allemagne, vous libérant ainsi de la demande obstinée du médiateur et des Danois à ce sujet. Il serait également tout aussi nécessaire qu'avantageux pour Nous et pour le royaume, comme vous le savez vous-mêmes, dans l'état actuel des choses, que nous puissions conserver la pleine possession dudit évêché, au moins aussi longtemps que nous serons en guerre contre l'Allemagne.

Mais comme Nous avons remarqué cependant, par votre dernière lettre du 30 juillet, quelles nouvelles difficultés surgiraient pour vous à ce sujet, et Nous avons considéré que, parce que Nous ne voudrions pas Nous accommoder de la proposition du médiateur ni satisfaire en quoi que ce soit le fils du roi du Danemark, non seulement Nous prendrions le blâme de tous les gens, mais il chercherait aussi tous les moyens de s'établir à nouveau par des pratiques dans l'évêché, et Nous aurions donc toujours un certain ennemi à attendre de lui.

C'est pourquoi, et comme Nous sommes maintenant satisfaites de tout le reste et que la difficulté réside maintenant seulement en cela, Nous devons montrer au monde que l'évêché de Brême ne Nous préoccupe pas tant et que Nous ne voulons donc pas faire la guerre, mais que Nous estimons que la paix est plus bénéfique pour Nous et Notre Royaume, comme Nous vous l'avons écrit le 2 août au sujet de Notre opinion finale concernant la restitution dudit évêché de Brême, à savoir que vous devriez finalement, voyant que vous ne pouvez pas aller plus loin, décider de Nous donner, ainsi qu'à la Couronne, les fortifications les plus importantes de l'évêché avec autant de terrain sous elles que Nos garnisons sur les mêmes fortifications peuvent être entretenues, puis de restituer le reste à l'évêque après la conclusion du traité, avec la condition qui y est indiquée, par laquelle résolution nous le laissons également en vigueur, car Nous pensons en partie que vous aurez peut-être conclu le traité avant que cette Notre lettre ne vous parvienne.

Nous vous confions donc avec la plus grande bienveillance qu'après avoir examiné toutes les questions, vous prendrez la décision la plus favorable à Nous et à Notre État, puis vous conclurez le traité au nom du Seigneur. Ceci Nous vient à l'esprit pour vous rappeler qu'après le roi de Danemark, qui sera gratifié par Nous de la restitution de l'évêché, vous veillerez avec diligence à ce que lui et le roi de Danemark s'obligent par là même à Nous laisser accueillir tous les Allemands et les étrangers qu'ils ont utilisés contre nous pendant cette guerre et qui sont sans aucun doute en voie d'être renvoyés, afin qu'ils ne se mettent pas au service de l'empereur ou de Nos ennemis; et Nous voulons par la présente, etc.

Our especial favour, etc. We received, faithful men and commissioners to the Danish peace treaty, your letter yesterday morning with Claes Brorsson Rålamb, dated Söderåkra on the 1st of this month; in which you first state that you have met the previous day with the Danish commissioners at Brömsebro and there through the mediator corrected their taken decree according to your concept, then also how on the same occasion such discourses about the bishopric of Bremen have gone, that you have not been much to dissuade the Danish commissioners from not being resolved to conclude peace unless the King's son and the said bishopric were included therein.

And 3., that after everything else that has been disputed between Us and Denmark, both over the free and undisturbed course of commerce and navigation through the Sound and the Belt, as well as over satisfaction and assurance, is clear and accorded, and the difficulty now only arises in the bishopric of Bremen, you desire that We instruct you on how We wish it to be dealt with, that either you will follow Our previous order and strictly so in the highest degree, or that you also allow the restitution of the bishopric to proceed in accordance with the mediator's proposal.

For a most gracious answer and information on Our opinion and final resolution on this matter, We do indeed gladly learn that the treaty has come to these terms; We thank God, who has so far felicitated and assisted Our counsels and your careful negotiations.

Now, We wrote to you on July 23, letting you understand that for some particular reasons and considerations (which We deem unnecessary to repeat here), We then considered it a good and convenient expedient that you remit the affair of the restitution of the bishopric of Bremen to the treaty in Germany and thereby relieve yourself from the mediator's and the Danes' obstinate request in this matter. It would also be no less necessary than advantageous to Us and the realm, as you yourselves well know, in the current state of affairs if We could remain in complete possession of the said bishopric, at least for as long as we are in the German war.

But as We have noticed in the meantime from your later letter of July 30 what new difficulties would arise for you in this matter, and We have considered that because We would not want to accommodate Ourself to the mediator's proposal or to gratify the King of Denmark's son with anything, We would not only take on blame from all people, but he would also seek every means to establish himself with practices in the bishopric again, and We would therefore always have a certain enemy to expect in him.

Therefore, and as We are now satisfied in everything else and the difficulty now only lies in this, We have to show the world that the bishopric of Bremen is not of such great concern to Us and that We therefore do not want to wage war, but We esteem that peace is more beneficial to Us and Our Realm, as We wrote to you on August 2 about what Our final opinion was regarding the restitution of the said bishopric of Bremen, namely that you should finally, seeing that you cannot proceed further, resolve to give Us and the Crown the most important fortifications in the bishopric with as much land under them as Our garrisons on the same fortifications can be maintained with, and then to restitute the rest to the Bishop after the treaty is concluded, with the condition stated therein, by which resolution We now also allow it to stand, as We partly have thoughts that you perhaps will have concluded the treaty before this Our letter reaches you.

Then We most graciously entrust to you that, after considering all matters, you will make the counsel that may be most agreeable to Us and Our State, and then you will conclude the treaty in the Lord's name. This alone occurs to Us herein to remind you that after the King of Denmark, who will be gratified by Us with the restitution of the bishopric, you will therefore diligently seek that he and the King of Denmark thereby oblige themselves to let Us receive all the German people and foreign people whom they have used against us in this war and who are undoubtedly now being dismissed, so that they may not come into the service of the Emperor or Our enemies; and We hereby want, etc.
