J'ai reçu, avec tout le respect convenable, de la personne connue de Votre Majesté la lettre adressée par elle à mon prédécesseur, lettre pleine de tant d'honnêteté et d'une si extraordinaire bienveillance à notre égard. Si mon prédécesseur eût veçu jusqu'à ce jour, c'eût été pour lui une joie incomparable d'avoir une si bonne occasion de rendre ses services à Votre Majesté. Mais Dieu, qui tient notre vie en ses mains, l'ayant appelé, comme nous en avons la confiance, à la patrie céleste, j'ai dû recevoir au moins pour un temps sa charge sur mes épaules. Je considère comme une partie de l'héritage qu'il me transmet l'obligation et le désir de répondre à l'appel de Votre Majesté, et d'exécuter ses commandements dans la mesure de mon pouvoir. Aussi m'occupe-je activement de chercher les hommes que désire Votre Majesté et j'espère pouvoir les lui envoyer bientôt. Bien qu'il s'en trouve plusieurs, grâce à Dieu, qui seraient fort capables de mener à bien l'affaire en question, néanmoins pour la plupart ils se trouvent présentement si occupés dans les ministères publics qu'on ne pourrait les en retirer sans faire connaître ou du moins soupçonner les motifs de leur déplacement; ce qui pourrait compromettre le succès de l'affaire et irait, je crois, contre les intentions de Votre Majesté. Je ne négligerai rien pour faire le meilleur choix possible, et sous peu de jours j'écrirai de nouveau à Votre Majesté, pour lui faire connaître ceux que j'aurai désignés et l'informer de leur départ.
En attendant, je rends à Votre Majesté de très humbles actions de grâces pour la bonté qu'elle nous témoigne, et je prie Dieu de l'en récompenser en lui accordant une pleine et parfaite félicité en cette vie et en l'autre.

Jag har mottagit, med all respekt, från den person som Ers Majestät känner till det brev som hon riktat till min föregångare, ett brev fullt av sådan ärlighet och en sådan utomordentligt god vilja mot oss. Om min föregångare hade levt till denna dag, skulle det ha varit en makalös glädje för honom att få ett så gott tillfälle att utföra sina tjänster åt Ers Majestät. Men Gud, som håller ju vårt liv i sina händer, efter att ha kallat honom, som vi litar på, till det himmelska fäderneslandet, har jag varit tvungen att ta emot, åtminstone för en tid, hans börda på mina axlar. I have received, with all due respect, from the person known to Your Majesty the letter addressed by her to my predecessor, a letter full of such honesty and such extraordinary good will towards us. If my predecessor had lived to this day, it would have been an incomparable joy for him to have such a good opportunity to render his services to Your Majesty. But God, who holds our life in His hands, having called him, as we trust, to the heavenly homeland, I have had to receive, at least for a time, his burden on my shoulders. I consider it part of his legacy to me the obligation and desire to respond to Your Majesty's call and to carry out your commands to the extent of my power.
So I am actively occupying myself in looking for the men Your Majesty wants, and I hope to be able to send them to you soon. Although there are several, thank God, who would be very capable of carrying out the matter in question, nevertheless for the most part they find themselves at present so busy in the public ministries that they could not be removed from it without making known or at least suspected the reasons for their travel; which could compromise the success of the affair and would, I believe, go against Your Majesty's intentions. I will neglect nothing to make the best possible choice, and in a few days I will write again to Your Majesty to let you know about those whom I have designated and to inform you of their departure.
In the meantime, I return to Your Majesty very humble thanks for the kindness you show us, and I pray God to reward you by granting you a full and perfect felicity in this life and in the next.

The two Jesuit fathers who Father Nickel chose for the mission to Kristina were Father Francesco Malines and Father Paolo Casati.
