Le 17. Juin 1682.
Monsieur le Duc de Guadagna, quand je vous écrivis, on m'avoit parlé de vous d'une maniére à me persuader qu'on souhaittoit de vous employer, si vos prétentions n'étoient pas trop hautes; mais depuis, l'économie l'a emporté, comme je le croirois, sur toute autre considération; & voyant qu'on avoit résolu d'établir un Poste, & une paye qui n'étoit pas digne de vous, j'ai cru qu'il ne falloit pas pousser les choses plus loin. On a déclaré, comme vous l'aurez su, le Marquis degl' d'Oddi Général de Bataille, avec si peu de paye que j'ai honte de vous le dire. Cependant je vous remercie de tout ce que vous me dites d'obligeant, & suis ravie de voir la sage & honnête disposition où vous êtes. Je vous prie de croire que je serai alerte, & qu'il n'échappera aucune occasion proportionnée à votre mérite, dans laquelle je ne fasse mes efforts pour vous procurer une fortune digne de vous. Je souhaitte d'y réussir selon mon desir, mais j'ai sujet de croire que ma protection vous sera plutôt un obstacle dans un tems où les recommandations de tout le monde ne servent de rien; cependant si les conjonctures répondent à mes souhaits, j'espére que je ne vous serai pas tout-à-fait inutile. Tenez-vous prêt à tout, & attendez de mes nouvelles. Adieu.

Signor il duca di Guadagni,
När jag skrev till Er, hade man talat till mig om Er på ett sådant sätt att jag kunde övertala att man ville anställa Er, om Era anspråk inte var för höga; men sedan dess har ekonomin segrat, som jag skulle tro, över alla andra hänsyn; och då jag såg att man hade bestämt sig för att inrätta en tjänst och en lön som inte var Er värdig, tänkte jag att man inte borde driva saken vidare. Som Ni säkert har vetat har markisen degl' d'Oddi blivit utropad till stridsgeneral, med så lite lön att jag skäms över att berätta det för Er. Emellertid tackar jag Er för allt Ni säger till mig, och det glädjer mig att se det kloka och ärliga sinnet Ni är i. Signor il duca di Guadagni,
When I wrote to you, one had spoken to me of you in such a way as to persuade me that one wished to employ you, if your pretensions were not too high; but since then economy has prevailed, as I would believe, over every other consideration; and seeing that one had resolved to establish a post, and a pay which was not worthy of you, I thought that one should not push things further. As you will have known, the Marquis degl' d'Oddi has been declared General of Battle, with so little pay that I am ashamed to tell you. In the meantime, I thank you for all the obliging things you say to me, and I am delighted to see the wise and honest disposition in which you are. I beg you to believe that I will be alert, and that no occasion will escape, proportionate to your merit, on which I will not make my efforts to procure for you a fortune worthy of you. I wish to succeed in it according to my desire, but I have reason to believe that my protection will rather be an obstacle to you at a time when everyone's recommendations are of no use; however, if conjunctures respond to my wishes, I hope that I will not be entirely useless to you. Keep yourself ready for anything, and wait to hear from me. Goodbye.
