Det sincera hjärtelag som jag vid alla tillfällen av Eders Majestät försport haver förbinder mig Eders Majestät härmed sonkärligen tillkänna giva hurusåsom den Högste Gud den 26 juni nästförleden haver förlossat mitt kärälskeliga gemål och oss bägges med en ung dotter och prinsessa hugnat och begåvat, och såsom jag nogsamt är förvissat att Eders Majestät tager part av all den lycksalighet som mig och mitt Kungliga Hus uti en eller annan måtto vederfars, alltså förmodar jag jämväl Eders Majestät varder sig med mig över den av Gud mig och mitt älskliga kära gemål förlänte nåd och välsignelse hugnandes och därjämte försäkrandes att såsom vi detta vårt kära barn i gudsfruktan och dygd uppfostrandes, detsamma icke mindre och till skyldig kärlek emot Eders Majestät ervisandes varda. La sincère affection que j'ai ressentie en toutes occasions de la part de Votre Majesté m'oblige par la présente à annoncer filialement à Votre Majesté comment, le 26 juin dernier, il a plu au Dieu Très-Haut de délivrer, de réjouir et de donner mon épouse bien-aimée et nous deux avec une jeune fille et princesse, et comme je suis tout à fait certain que Votre Majesté participe à tout le bonheur que moi et ma Maison Royale éprouvons d'une manière ou d'une autre, je présume donc également que Votre Majesté se réjouira avec moi de la grâce et la bénédiction accordées par Dieu sur moi et mon très chère épouse; et en même temps j'assure que, comme nous élèverons cette notre chère enfant dans la crainte de Dieu et dans la vertu, nous ne l'élèverons pas moins pour montrer l'amour qui est dû envers Votre Majesté. Je recommande pour le reste Votre Majesté à la protection du Très-Haut et à toute prospérité désirable. Donné à Stockholm, le 29 juin 1681.

The sincere affection which I have on all occasions felt from Your Majesty obliges me to hereby filially announce to Your Majesty how on the 26th of this past June, it pleased the Most High God on to deliver of and gladden and gift my dearly beloved consort and us both with a young daughter and princess, and as I am quite certain that Your Majesty takes part in all the happiness that me and my Royal House experience in one way or another, I also therefore presume that Your Majesty will be rejoice with me over the grace and blessing bestowed by God on me and my dearly beloved consort; and at the same time I assure that as we shall bring up this our dear child in the fear of God and in virtue, we shall no less bring her up to show due love towards Your Majesty. I commend Your Majesty for the rest to the protection of the Most High and to all desirable prosperity. Given at Stockholm, June 29, 1681.

Note: Princess Hedvig Sofia was Karl's eldest child and first daughter. When she grew up, she married Friedrich IV, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp (1671-1702). She was heir presumptive to the Swedish throne until her death in 1708 at the tender age of 27, and she also served as regent of Holstein-Gottorp for her minor son Karl Friedrich (1700-1739) from 1702 to 1708. Through him, and interestingly, she was the paternal grandmother of Tsar Peter III of Russia (1728-1762; formerly Karl Peter Ulrich of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp) and, through his marriage, the grandmother-in-law of Catherine the Great (1729-1796; formerly Sophia of Anhalt-Zerbst), the last empress regnant of Russia.
