Un des principaux Chefs de la Régence mourut au commencement de cette année [1641]: les Sénateurs déférerent la nomination de son successeur à la jeune Reine, qui approchoit de l'âge de majorité. On eut lieu de louer, dans cette occasion délicate, sa prudence, pour ne point marquer de prédilection, & pour prévenir les plaintes de la jalousie. Elle écrivit au Prince Palatin Jean Casimir, son oncle, les raisons qui la déterminoient à ne point appeller nommément à la Régence Charles Gustave, fils de ce Prince, malgré la liaison du sang & de l'amitié, & parcequ'en effet il étoit à craindre de l'approcher trop près du Trône sur lequel il pouvoit avoir des vues. Christine se fit désigner tous ceux qui avoient droit de prétendre à la dignité vacante, & elle en laissa la décision au sort, qui se déclara en faveur du Comte de Brahé. Peu de temps après, le Sénat invita la jeune Reine à venir présider à ses assemblées: elle y fut très assidue. Elle quittoit avec joie ses amusemens, pour se livrer à la discussion des affaires les plus graves & les plus épineuses, avec de vieux & sages Conseillers & des politiques profonds, qu'elle ravissoit par la vivacité de son esprit, & la pénétration de son jugement.

En av förmyndarregeringens främsta chefer dog i början av detta år [1641]. Rådsmännen sköt upp nomineringen av hans efterträdare till den unga drottningen, som närmade sig myndig ålder. Det fanns anledning att vid detta känsliga tillfälle berömma hennes försiktighet att inte visa förkärlek och att förhindra klagomål om avundsjuka. Hon skrev till pfalzgreven Johan Kasimir, hennes farbror, skälen som beslöt henne att inte kalla Karl Gustav, denne furstes son, till förmyndarregeringen, trots sambandet av blod och vänskap, och för att det i själva verket skulle fruktas att föra honom för nära tronen som han kunde ha mönster på.
Kristina lät utpeka alla som hade rätt att göra anspråk på den lediga värdigheten, och hon lämnade beslutet åt ödet, som förklarade sig till förmån för greve Brahe. Kort därefter bjöd Rådet in den unga drottningen att komma och presidera vid dess församlingar; hon var väldigt idog där. Hon lämnade med glädje sina nöjen för att ägna sig åt diskussionen om de allvarligaste och svåraste angelägenheterna med gamla och kloka rådsmän och djupsinniga politiker, som hon gladde av sitt sinnes livlighet och sitt omdömes penetration.
English translation (my own):
One of the principal heads of the regency died at the beginning of this year [1641]. The senators deferred the nomination of his successor to the young Queen, who was approaching the age of majority. There was reason to praise, on this delicate occasion, her prudence in not showing predilection and in preventing complaints of jealousy. She wrote to the Prince Palatine Johan Kasimir, her uncle, the reasons which determined her not to namely call Karl Gustav, this prince's son, to the regency, in spite of the connection of blood and friendship, and because in fact it was to be feared to bring him too close to the throne on which he could have designs.
Kristina had all those designated who had the right to claim the vacant dignity, and she left the decision to fate, which declared itself in favour of Count Brahe. Shortly afterwards, the Senate invited the young Queen to come and preside at its assemblies; she was very assiduous there. She joyfully left her amusements to devote herself to the discussion of the most grave and thorny affairs with old and wise councilmen and profound politicians, whom she delighted by the vivacity of her mind and the penetration of her judgement.

Notes: The Grand Steward who had passed away was Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna. He had actually died on November 27/December 7 (Old Style), 1640 and was buried at Tyresö Church on March 9/19 (Old Style), 1641.
Kristina attended her/his/their first council meeting on May 12/22 (Old Style), 1643, five months after turning sixteen.
