Excerpt from Johann Friedrich Gronovius' letter to Nicolaus Heinsius, dated March 12/22 (New Style), 1652

Sources:

Sylloge epistolarum a viris illustribus, volume 3, page 292, published by Pieter Burman the Elder, 1727

The letter excerpt:

... Ad illustriss. Puteanum differo in diem, immo in horas scribere: promitto tamen te proxime habiturum: nam festino stans pede in uno, & paratus ad iter in Geldriam & propinqua divortiis Rheni, inde in Hollandiam, ubi ante omnia salutabo Vossium nostrum, & intelligam, quo numime laeso exciderit gratia dominae non Reginae, sed Gallinae. ... Daventriae XI. Kal. Apriles. CIϽIϽCLII. statim acceptis tuis, quas III. Non. Feb. dederas.

With modernised spelling:

... Ad illustrisissimum Puteanum differo in diem, immo in horas scribere; promitto tamen te proxime habiturum; nam festino stans pede in uno, et paratus ad iter in Geldriam et propinqua divortiis Rheni, inde in Hollandiam, ubi ante omnia salutabo Vossium nostrum, et intelligam, quo numime læso exciderit gratia dominæ non reginæ, sed Gallinæ. ... Daventriæ, XI Kalendæ apriles 1652.

Statim acceptis tuis, quas III nones februarii dederas.

English translation (my own):

... To the most illustrious del Pozzo I put off writing for a day, no, for hours; I promise, however, that he will keep you close; for, standing hastily on one foot, and ready to travel to Gelderland, and near the fords of the Rhine, from thence to Holland, where before all things I will salute our Vossius and understand by what injury the grace of the Lady, not of the Queen, but of France, has fallen. ... Deventer, the 11th Kalends of April 1652.

Immediately after this I received your letter of the 3rd Nones of February.

Notes: Cassiano del Pozzo was an Italian scholar and patron of arts.

Vossius = Isaac Vossius.

The 11th Kalends of April = March 22.

The 3rd Nones of February = February 8.
