The letter:

Monsieur le Gouverneur Général. Considérant que mes joïaux, qui sont entre les mains de mon Résident Texeira, mangent annuellement un grand intérêt à six pour cent, & ne doutant point qu'on ne les puisse engager à un moindre prix, je suis bien dans l'intention de ne les pas retirer des mains dudit Texeira, puisque je les crois étre-là en bonne garde & sûreté. Mais je veux néanmoins qu'en passant par la Hollande, vous cherchiez à combien moins on pourroit les engager, & qu'ensuite vous offriez audit mon Résident Texeira, de les tenir au même intérêt qu'un autre les voudra prendre, étant persuadée, que comme un zélè serviteur il sera autant porté pour mon avantage qu'un étranger: & Dieu vous conserve & vous fasse prospérer. Rome ce 18. Juin 1685.

Sir Governor General,

Considering that my jewels, which are in the hands of my resident Texeira, eat a great six percent interest annually, and having no doubts that they cannot be pledged at a lower price, I have every intention of not having the steps taken from the hands of said Texeira, since I believe them to be there in good guard and safety. But I want nevertheless that, while passing by Holland, you seek how much less one could engage them, and that then you offer to my resident Texeira to keep them in the same interest that another will want to take them, being persuaded that, like a zealous servant, he will be as much carried to my advantage as a stranger; and God keep you and bless you.
