JO vi rimando la lettera, che voi havete scritta al vostro Padre, apostillata della mia mano. Stimo che saprete intenderla: in quella vedrete, ch' io sono sodisfattissima di voi fin qui. Mi pare un' hora mill' anni di sentire il ritorno del Ré, e comminciati li nostri negozi, per veder più chiaro nelli fatti miei, già ne spero poco, ed ogni poca di cosa che ne potreste spuntare, mi parerebbe assai, perche sono persuasissima della mala intentione di questa Corte verso di me, e della ingratitudine loro. Mà mi basta di tener la lite accesa. La vita, e la morte mia stà nella mano d'Iddio, ma haverò la consolatione di veder morire, chi desidera la mia. Della pensione non se ne parli più. Del cambio sentite che vi dicono, ed io poi risolverò; bisogna veder' se torna conto. Jo baratterò volontieri la Pomerania col Bremese, pur che mi si desse l'equivalente, non solo diquello che possiedo hoggidi, mà anche di quello che dovrei possedere. A questo bisogna avertire. Une heure me paroit mille ans jusques à ce que j'apprenne le retour du Roi, & que nos négociations soïent commencées pour voir plus clair dans mes affaires. Je ne m'en promèts pas beaucoup, mais pour peu que vous y puissiez avancer, cela me paroitra autant de gagné, n'étant que trop persuadée de la mauvaise intention de cette Cour envers moi & de son ingratitude. Il me suffira de tenir la querelle allumée. Que le Tout-Puissant dispose de ma vie & de ma mort, mais j'aurai la consolation de voir arriver la mort de ceux qui souhaitent la mienne. Ne parlez plus de la pension. Quant à l'échange, prêtez l'oreille à ce qu'on vous en dira: je me résoudrai après là-dessus. Il faut voir si j'y trouve mon compte. Il est vrai qu'elle se trouve entre le marteau & l'enclume, & je crois qu'elle se gouverne bien, mais dégagez vous de ce mauvais pas. An hour seems like a thousand years to me until I learn of the King's return, and our negotiations begin to see more clearly in my affairs. I do not promise much, but if you can move forward, it will seem to me so much gained, being only too convinced of the bad intention of this court towards me and its ingratitude. It will be enough for me to keep the quarrel alight. May the Almighty dispose of my life and my death, but I will have the consolation of seeing the death of those who wish for mine. Stop talking about the pension. As for the exchange, listen to what you are told; I will resolve myself on that afterwards. You have to see if I find my account there. I would gladly trade Pomerania for the Duchy of Bremen, provided I was given some equivalent not only of what I am now in possession of, but also of what I should have. You must take note of that. I am sending you back the letter you have written to your father, with a postscript from my hand. I esteem you will know to understand it; in it you will see that I am very satisfied with you so far. It seems to me an hour more than a thousand years before I hear of the King's return and the beginning of our affairs, to see my affairs more clearly; I already have little hope for it, and even the smallest thing you might gain from it would seem a great deal, because I am very persuaded of this court's bad intentions toward me and of their ingratitude, but it is enough for me to keep the quarrel alive. My life and death are in God's hands, but I will have the consolation of seeing those die who desire me to die.
Let's not talk about the pension anymore. Listen to what they tell you about the exchange, and then I'll decide; we'll see if it pays off. I'd gladly trade Pomerania for Bremen as long as they gave me the equivalent not only of what I currently own, but also of what I should own; you must be aware of this. I would give everything to have all of Bremen, but with all its sovereignty. Enough now, listen to what they tell you and ask them if possible; if they don't want it, then so be it. Stick to your instructions and get as much out of it as you can.
Your love affairs with this lady must be completely forgotten, completely. You speak of an commitment. Remember that the only commitment you have is the fidelity you owe to your wife, that which you have made to God and man; and from any other you will derive nothing but shame, penitence and prejudice to your soul and to your body. I am not scrupulous, but I commend your soul to you. I know you are young. I don't expect you to be an anchorite or a hermit, but do not get angry with anyone again, especially since you are betraying that poor woman by making her believe you love her.
It's true that she lives among galley slaves and sailors, and I believe she fits the bill. I promise you she governs herself well; but get out of this trap. I've adjusted all her affairs, and there's no more to say, and I've adjusted them with such honour and reputation that she has given admiration to all.
Here things are as usual. The French are stronger than us in Rome, even though they are not armed. The Pope is more hated than anyone else, and what's worse, despised by all, he has finally accepted the mediation of England, which he previously refused to hear of. When Philippsburg is taken, then we will lower our breeches to our heels, but I have a poor opinion of the affairs of England. God grant that I am mistaken!
As for you, take heart. Don't let your youth and lack of experience bother you. Your father, of happy memory, had less capacity than you when I began using him, and yet he became the great man he was when, to your misfortune, we lost him.
