"Kristina ... was becoming more and more eager to serve France, whose interests were in such good harmony with those of the 'Squadron' and its leader, Azzolino. Despite her indisposition, she immediately set to work to keep the cabinet at Versailles more fully informed. The 'table of the state of the court of Rome' which we are about to read is a most lucid exposition of the situation, and the events were to justify in a striking fashion the forecasts of the Queen. It is obviously on Azzolino's communications that Kristina's writing is based, but the style is absolutely personal, and it cannot be a simple translation. Azzolino himself was much too cautious to dare speak with such frankness. It should also be remembered that this document is the work of a sick woman tormented by anxieties. From this point of view, it constitutes a remarkable testimony to the energy Kristina could, on occasion, develop."

Depuis l'année passée l'on forma une si forte cabale contre le cardinal Farnèse que l'on peut assurer quasi que tout ce qu'il y a de gens d'honneur entre les cardinaux sont engagés à son exclusion. Les ennemis de la France ont tâché de faire croire aux gens qu'elle était engagée pour le porter au pontificat, et on fait courir ces bruits afin d'aliéner les esprits d'ailleurs bien disposés et prêts à s'affectionner à la France, croyant profiter de cette opinion pour unir à leur intérêt ceux qu'ils savent intéressées d'honneur et de conscience à s'opposer à ce dessein, faisant accroire, pour se rendre agréables, qu'ils lui donneraient l'exclusion. Il est donc nécessaire que du côté de la France l'on guérisse les esprits de ces alarmes, et que l'on s'en justifie. Ce n'est pas que ce cardinal n'ait d'aussi bonnes qualités qu'un autre pour pouvoir prétendre, mais son malheur veut qu'on l'accuse de plusieurs choses, qui l'ont rendu fort odieux. Il serait long de vous en particulariser le détail, et je ne vous en parlerai pas de crainte de me rendre suspecte d'animosité; mais soit qu'on l'accuse à tort ou à raison, son malheur ou sa faute lui ont rendu ennemis quasi tout ce qu'il y a de gens d'honneur dans le collège des cardinaux. Cela n'empêche pas qu'il ne soit destiné au pontificat par le cardinal Nini et par conséquent par le cardinal Chigi, lesquels feront tous les efforts pour l'élever à ce rang. Le cardinal Chigi, se flattant sur le nombre de ses créatures, croit facilement d'en venir à bout, mais néanmoins je tiens qu'il se verra trompé, car la reconnaissance des bienfaits est un fond qui manque toujours à ceux qui comptent là-dessus; mais lui qui a su l'art de se faire des ennemis au lieu des créatures, ne pourra pas leur reprocher l'ingratitude, puisque son procédé l'a mérité. Ajoutez à cela que l'autorité qu'exerce le cardinal Nini auprès de lui, et l'amitié excessive qui est entre eux, augmentant le mépris qu'on a pour sa faiblesse, et la haine et l'aversion que toutes les autres créatures portent au cardinal Nini, leur font souffrir avec indignation l'insolence et la tyrannie que cet homme leur veut imposer; et cela fait aussi accroître l'aversion quasi universelle qu'ils portent au cardinal Farnèse, et quand il n'y aurait pas d'autres obstacles à la fortune de ce cardinal, je crois que l'amitié de Nini serait seule suffisante pour l'empêcher.
Outre cela, la faction du cardinal Chigi est composée d'un grand nombre de prétendants, et quand d'ailleurs il en serait le maître absolu, cela suffit pour la rendre faible; car tous ceux qui savent et sont persuadés qu'il n'a pas dessein sur eux, se jetteront du côté opposé à ses desseins pour les traverser et s'en venger; et comme c'est un jeu que les plus habiles ne découvrent jamais, le dessein du cardinal Chigi, ou, pour parler juste, du cardinal Nini, étant connu de tout le monde, trouvera des fortes oppositions en tout ce qu'il y a d'habiles et honnêtes gens parmi les cardinaux.
Voilà le véritable état de la constitution présente des intrigues et affaires de Rome. Tout roule là-dessus. De vous dire qui sera celui qui aura la fortune favorable, je ne le puis, je crois néanmoins que ce pourrait être ou le cardinal Ginetti ou le cardinal Rospigliosi. Quel des deux sera, ils sont assez dignes de l'être, et il y aura de quoi en être raisonnablement satisfaits. Pour moi, je ne saurais vous dire qui des deux je souhaite. Tous deux sont mes amis et, excepté le cardinal [...], il n'y a point dans le Sacré Collège, qui soit digne de l'être à qui je ne rendisse, si je pouvais, toute sorte de service pour contribuer à leur exaltation; car ils sont tous de mes amis, et je suis avec eux d'une manière que je ne crains aucun d'eux et ne crains pas le cardinal Farnèse même pour mon intérêt particulier, mais pour celui du public et de mes amis, qui ne peuvent y consentir avec honneur et conscience. Je m'assure qu'ils ne me dédiront pas ce que j'avance sur son sujet, et qu'à cela près le roi de France peut s'assurer de leurs services, surtout si on leur fait connaître qu'on ne désire d'eux que celui de Dieu et de l'Église, qui est, selon mon sens, le véritable intérêt de la France et leur unique but. C'est pourquoi, pour les unir à ses intérêts, il en faut faire son affaire et donner cette glorieuse couleur à toutes ses actions, mais surtout en cette occasion; car ce sont des gens d'honneur, qui n'étant pas accessibles aux voies de l'intérêt, ne le sont qu'à la gloire et à l'honneur.
Et comme en ce conclave ils seront plus forts que jamais par leur union, par leur habileté, par la faiblesse des autres factions et par la gloire [de] leur but, qui fortifiera leur nombre, il serait bon de les engager par les civilités, par l'estime et par la confiance, qu'on leur pourra témoigner. Le duc de Chaulnes a commencé déjà d'y travailler d'une si bonne manière, qu'on se peut promettre un heureux succès dans les suites d'un si beau commencement, et je suis caution au Roi qu'il s'en trouvera bien aux occasions, et qu'on le servira dans ces termes avec honneur et sincérité, m'assurant que les cardinaux de l'escadron ne me désavoueront pas, quoique je n'aie pas la témérité de vouloir prétendre d'en disposer; mais étant assez informée de leurs sentiments, j'espère qu'ils ne me dédiront pas et je suis persuadée que le cardinal Azzolino confirmera toutes les vérités que je vous ai confiées en ce discours. Je pourrais vous dire encore plusieurs autres choses concernant cette matière, mais n'ayant pas de chiffre avec vous je n'ose me hasarder à rien de plus. Si la confiance s'établit, comme j'espère, entre le cardinal Azzolino et le duc de Chaulnes, vous saurez d'eux beaucoup de particularités que je n'ose confier à la plume.
P. S. — J'oubliais de vous dire que l'on m'écrit de Rome que D. Sigismond se va mettre en prélature, et cela s'appelle qu'il sera cardinal dans la première promotion, et au lieu de fortifier la faction de Chigi, il l'affaiblira; car elle sera partagée, et les plus habiles se serviront de lui pour traverser les desseins de Nini, dont tout le reste de la maison Chigi est ennemie, excepté le cardinal Chigi, lequel l'aime plus qu'il ne mérite et plus qu'il ne devrait. Add to this that the authority which Cardinal Nini exercises over him, and the excessive friendship which is between them, increasing the contempt one has for his weakness, and the hatred and aversion which all other creatures bring to Cardinal Nini, make them suffer with indignation the insolence and tyranny that this man wants to impose on them; and this also increases the almost universal aversion they have for Cardinal Farnese, and if there were no other obstacles to the fortune of this cardinal, I believe that Nini's friendship would alone be sufficient to prevent it.

Both are my friends and, except for the cardinal [...], there is no one in the Sacred College who is worthy of my not rendering, if I could, any kind of service to contribute to their exaltation; for they are all my friends, and I am with them in a way that I do not fear any of them and do not fear Cardinal Farnese even for my private interest, but for that of the public and of my friends, who cannot consent with honour and conscience. I assure myself that they will not tell me what I say on this subject, and that apart from that the King of France can secure their services, especially if we let them know that we do not wish to them than that of God and of the Church, which is, in my view, the true interest of France and their only goal. This is why, to unite them to one's interests, one must make it one's business and give this glorious colour to all one's actions, but especially on this occasion; for they are people of honour, who, not being accessible to the paths of self-interest, are accessible only to glory and honour.
And as in this conclave they will be stronger than ever by their union, by their skill, by the weakness of the other factions and by the glory of their goal, which will fortify their number, it would be good to engage them by civilities, by esteem and by trust, which we can testify to them. The Duc de Chaulnes has already begun to work there in such a good way, that one can promise happy success in the aftermath of such a fine beginning, and I am sure the King will find himself there on occasions, and that he will be served in these terms with honour and sincerity, assuring me that the cardinals of the squadron will not disavow me, although I do not have the temerity to want to pretend to dispose of it; but being sufficiently informed of their feelings, I hope that they will not tell me; and I am persuaded that Cardinal Azzolino will confirm all the truths that I confided to you in this speech. I could tell you many other things about this matter, but not having a cipher with you, I dare not venture anything more. If confidence is established, as I hope, between Cardinal Azzolino and the Duc de Chaulnes, you will know many particulars about them which I dare not confide to the pen.
