MADAME,

J'ai lu au Roi le mémoire que Votre Majesté m'a fait l'honneur de m'adresser, écrit de sa main, sur les affaires de Rome, et nommément sur ce qui regarde le prochain conclave. Il me serait mal aisé d'expliquer à Votre Majesté à quel point sa proposition a plu au Roi, et combien il s'en est tenu obligé. Je crois qu'il en voudra témoigner lui-même son ressentiment à Votre Majesté par l'ordinaire prochain, s'il n'a pas le temps de le faire par celui-ci, qui est prêt à partir. Cependant pour témoigner à Votre Majesté le cas qu'on a fait de son ouverture et de ses offres, après l'avoir assurée qu'on gardera inviolablement le secret, qui est l'âme de pareilles choses, je dois lui rendre compte que le Roi venant tout présentement de recevoir avis, par la voie de Venise, que la maladie du pape s'est augmentée très considérablement, la fièvre étant survenue à ses autres incommodités, Sa Majesté m'a commandé d'adresser à M. le duc de Chaulnes, son ambassadeur, l'original même du mémoire de Votre Majesté avec deux ordres: l'un, que si le pape meurt, il le fasse voir confidemment à M. le cardinal Azzolino, afin qu'il lui serve comme d'une lettre de créance de Votre Majesté, et qu'ensuite ils puissent s'ouvrir l'un à l'autre, et prendre ensemble toutes leurs mesures avant que le conclave se ferme; l'autre, que s'il n'est point pressé par la mort du pape, il ne témoigne pas au dit cardinal d'avoir reçu ledit mémoire; et qu'il ne fasse aucun pas dans l'affaire que les ordres de Votre Majesté n'aient eu le temps d'arriver, le Roi voulant que toutes choses passent par sa direction. Je serai en quelque inquiétude jusqu'à ce que Votre Majesté m'ait fait la grâce de me témoigner qu'elle a agréé qu'on ait pris de cette sorte les devants pour le seul cas de la mort du pape, afin que la bonne volonté de Votre Majesté pour la gloire et le bien des affaires de Mon Maître ne demeurât pas inutile, si cet accident arrivait avant qu'elle eût eu le temps de donner ses ordres à Rome.

Jag har läst för konungen den memorial som Ers Majestät har gjort mig äran att rikta till mig, skriven i egen hand, om Roms angelägenheter och särskilt om vad som gäller nästa konklav. Det vore mig svårt att förklara för Ers Majestät hur mycket Ert förslag behagade konungen, och hur mycket han har hållit sig bunden därav. Jag tror att han kommer att vilja vittna om sin känsla för Ers Majestät själv till nästa ordinarie, om han inte har tid att göra det genom denna, som är redo att bege sig. I have read to the King the memorandum which Your Majesty has done me the honour of addressing to me, written in your own hand, on the affairs of Rome, and specifically on what concerns the next conclave. It would be difficult for me to explain to Your Majesty how much your proposal pleased the King, and how much he has held himself bound by it. I believe he will want to testify his feeling to Your Majesty himself by the next ordinary, if he has not time to do so by this one, which is ready to leave. In the meantime, to testify to Your Majesty the value that has been made of your openness and your offers, after having assured you that we will keep the secret inviolably, which is the soul of such things, I must report to you that the King having just received notice, by way of Venice, that the Pope's illness has increased very considerably, the fever having supervened on his other inconveniences, His Majesty has commanded me to address to the Duke of Chaulnes, his ambassador, the very original of Your Majesty's memoir with two orders: one, that if the Pope dies, he should show him in confidence to Cardinal Azzolino, so that he may serve him as a letter of credence from Your Majesty, and that afterwards they may open to each other, and take all their measures together before the conclave closes; the other, that if he is not pressed by the death of the Pope, he does not testify to the said cardinal that he has received the said memorandum; and let him take no step in the matter untill Your Majesty's orders have had time to arrive, the King desiring all things to pass through his direction. I will be somewhat worried until Your Majesty has done me the grace to tell me that you have accepted that we have taken the initiative in this way for the sole case of the death of the Pope, so that the good of Your Majesty's will for the glory and the good of my master's affairs would not remain useless if this accident happened before you had time to give your orders to Rome.
