MADAME,
Si Votre Majesté n'avait pas l'esprit du monde le plus pénétrant pour savoir parfaitement démêler la vérité d'avec l'artifice, je me mettrais bien plus en peine que je ne ferai, pour lui faire connaître que ceux qui s'étudient (et je ne sais par quelle raison, ni ce qu'ils y peuvent gagner) à lui donner des soupçons de la sincérité de l'affection du Roi, ne l'ont pu faire qu'avec une très grande malignité, et fort calomnieusement. Il me suffira de dire à Votre Majesté que l'on nous a présenté le même poison, mais que nous n'avons pas voulu le boire; car on n'a rien omis pour faire croire à M. de Pomponne que Votre Majesté était partie de Rome avec de grands projets concertés avec le pape et la Maison d'Autriche directement contre les intérêts du Roi mon maître. Après cela il faut, comme on dit, tirer l'échelle; mais s'il reste encore à Votre Majesté le moindre petit ombrage des impressions qu'on lui a voulu donner contre la candeur de l'amitié du Roi, et qu'elle me fasse la grâce de me le témoigner, je la supplierai de trouver bon que l'on pousse l'affaire à bout, et que M. de Pomponne fasse imprimer, s'il est besoin d'en venir jusque-là, pour sa satisfaction, la qualité des ordres qu'il a reçus sur le sujet de Votre Majesté dans l'occasion de son voyage, et que Mrs les Ministres de la Couronne de Suède soient priés de déclarer si ledit sieur de Pomponne y a contrevenu, soit directement parlant contre lesdits ordres, ou les exécutant mollement.
Le Roi a eu un singulier plaisir de voir le tableau de la Cour de Rome, que Votre Majesté a si bien peint, et m'a fait l'honneur de me l'adresser. Je l'assure que Sa Majesté ne désirera rien de ses serviteurs qu'ils ne puissent faire avec honneur et conscience, ne se proposant en l'élection du pape que la gloire de Dieu et le bien de l'Église, ce qui est, comme Votre Majesté l'a très bien remarqué, le véritable intérêt de sa Couronne. Sa Majesté concourra volontiers et avec plaisir à l'exaltation de chacun des deux sujets que Votre Majesté croit pouvoir être le plus facilement exaltés, quoique le dernier ait été nonce en un lieu qui pourrait nous être suspect, mais c'est un homme de bien et fort galant homme.
Quant au cardinal, auquel je vois que ses serviteurs seront contraires, il ne nous est connu nec amore nec odio, et je ne doute pas qu'il n'y ait lieu de prendre là-dessus de bons concerts avec ses amis, s'ils veulent d'un autre côté nous guérir des soupçons que nous devons avoir contre quelque sujet qui ne nous serait pas fort agréable. Mais, Madame, oserais-je demander avec confiance à Votre Majesté, lui promettant le dernier secret, quels sont les sentiments, et quelles sont les pensées de ses serviteurs sur la personne de monsieur le cardinal Barbarin, qu'on dit que l'Escadron doit porter de toute sa force? Pour ce qui est de monsieur le cardinal d'Este, dont Votre Majesté, si je m'en souviens bien, parla il y a quelque temps au sieur Bidal, je la puis assurer qu'il fera aveuglément tout ce que le Roi lui ordonnera.
Le pape, par les dernières nouvelles du 7e de l'autre mois, se porte beaucoup mieux, et M. le cardinal Chigi avait déjà célébré cette bonne nouvelle par un grand banquet, qu'il a fait à ses amis.

Om Ers Majestät inte hade världens mest genomträngande sinne för att perfekt kunna skilja sanning från konstgjordhet, skulle jag göra mycket mer besvär än jag skulle göra för att låta er bara veta de som studerar (och jag vet inte för vad förnuft, ej heller vad de kan vinna på det) för att giva Er misstankar om uppriktigheten i konungens tillgivenhet, kunde endast ha gjort det med stor illvilja och mycket förtalande. Det kommer att räcka för mig att säga till Ers Majestät, att vi förärades med samma gift, men att vi inte ville dricka det; ty ingenting har utelämnats för att få monsieur de Pomponne att tro att Ers Majestät lämnade Rom med storslagna planer samordnade med påven och Österrikes hus direkt mot konungens intressen, min herre. Efter det är det nödvändigt, som de säger, att dra stegen; men om Ers Majestät ännu har den minsta ringa ombrage över de intryck som vi ville giva Er mot konungens vänskaps uppriktighet, och om Ni gör mig den tjänst att visa mig det, så skall jag bedja Er finna det gott att vi driver saken till slutet, och att monsieur de Pomponne har tryckt, om det är nödvändigt att komma till den punkten, för hans tillfredsställelse, kvaliteten på de befallningar han har mottagit i ämnet Ers Majestät i samband med hans resa, och att Sveriges Kronans ministrar anmodas att förklara, huruvida nämnda monsieur de Pomponne har överträtt dem, antingen talat direkt emot nämnda befallningar, eller verkställa dem svagt.
Konungen har haft ett enastående nöje att se bilden av Roms hov, som Ers Majestät har målat så väl, och har gjort mig äran att skicka den till mig. Jag försäkrar Er att Hans Majestät inte kommer att begära något av sina tjänare som de inte kan göra med heder och samvete, och föreslår i valet av påven endast Guds ära och Kyrkans bästa, vilket är, som Ers Majestät mycket väl har observerat, hans Kronas sanna intresse. Hans Majestät kommer villigt och med nöje att bidra till upphöjelsen av vart och ett av de två ämnen som Ers Majestät tror lättast kan upphöjas, även om den senare har varit nuntius på en plats som kan vara misstänkt för oss, men han är en god man och en mycket galant man.
Vad kardinalen angår, som jag ser, att hans tjänare kommer att stå emot, han är inte känd för oss nec amore nec odio, och jag tvivlar inte på att det finns anledning att ta goda konserter i detta ämne med sina vänner, om de vill å andra sidan för att bota oss från de misstankar vi måste ha mot något ämne som inte skulle vara oss särskilt angenämt. Men, madam, vågar jag med tillförsikt fråga Ers Majestät och lova Er den sista hemligheten, vilka känslor har Era tjänare, och vilka tankar Era tjänare har på kardinal Barbarinis person, som det sägs att Skvadronen måste bära med alla sina makt? If Your Majesty did not have the most penetrating mind in the world to know perfectly how to disentangle truth from artifice, I would go to much more trouble than I would do to let you know only those who study (and I do not know for what reason, nor what they can gain from it) to give you suspicions of the sincerity of the King's affection, could only have done it with great malignity, and very slanderously. But, Madame, dare I ask Your Majesty with confidence, promising you the last secret, what are the feelings, and what are the thoughts of your servants on the person of Cardinal Barbarini, whom it is said that the Squadron must bear with all its might? As for Cardinal d'Este, of whom Your Majesty, if I remember correctly, spoke some time ago to Monsieur Bidal, I can assure you that he will blindly do whatever the King orders him to do.
The Pope, according to the latest news of the 7th of the other month, is doing much better, and Cardinal Chigi had already celebrated this good news with a grand banquet which he gave to his friends.
