"C'est proprement ici que commencent les Négociations de Mr de Rosenbach, à la Cour [de] Suède, de la part de la Reine Christine. Nous en rendrons compte sur les Lettres que nous en avons reçu de Rome; mais comme la Reine avoit presqu'en même tems entamé une autre Négociation pour parvenir au Trône de Pologne après l'abdication du Roi Jean Casimir, nous séparerons celle-ci de l'autre, pour éviter au possible toute confusion. On apprendra par l'une & par l'autre qu'elle possédoit l'art de négocier à un haut degré: & on a d'autant moins lieu de douter que les Instructions qu'elle donnoit à ses Ministres, ne partissent uniquement de sa tête, puisqu'elle faisoit seule tout son Conseil quant aux affaires de Suède; & pour les autres, elle n'avoit à sa suite que son Secretaire Santini & le Marquis del Monte: mais même à leur égard elle dit un jour à son Gouverneur-Général: 'qu'elle avoit dressé elle-même ses Secretaires, son destin ayant été, non seulement de faire la fortune, mais aussi de former l'esprit des gens qui la servoient'.
Christine, en mandant à Rosenbach qu'elle est bien aise qu'il soit heureusement arrivé à Stockholm, lui exprime l'extrême joye qu'elle a eu en apprenant que le Sénateur Seved Bååt a obtenu la Charge de Grand-Trésorier de Suède. ..."
"It is here that Lord von Rosenbach's negotiations at the court of Sweden — undertaken on Queen Kristina's behalf — properly begin. We shall give an account of these events based on the letters we have received from Rome; but because the Queen had, at nearly the same time, initiated another negotiation to reach the throne of Poland after the abdication of King Jan Kazimierz, we shall treat this latter matter separately from the former in order to avoid any possible confusion.
From both accounts, one will learn that she possessed the art of negotiating to a high degree; moreover, there is all the less reason to doubt that the instructions she gave to her ministers originated solely from her own mind, given that she constituted her entire Council herself where the affairs of Sweden were concerned. As for other affairs, her suite consisted solely of her secretary Santini and the Marquis del Monte; yet even with regard to them, she said one day to her governor general that she had trained her secretaries herself, it having been her destiny not only to make the fortune of those who served her, but also to shape their minds.
In telling Rosenbach that she is very pleased that he has arrived happily in Stockholm, Kristina expresses the extreme joy she has had upon learning that the senator Seved Bååth has obtained the charge of Grand Treasurer of Sweden. ..."
The letter:
Vous le féliciterez de ma part avec les plus vives expressions que vous pourrez trouver, de la sincérité desquelles je ne doute pas qu'il ne soit persuadé, puisqu'il sait très-bien qu'il y a long-tems que je lui ai souhaité ce poste, dont il est si digne. Et puisqu'il desire de retenir encore la charge de mon Gouverneur-Général, j'en suis fort contente, l'assurant qu'elle sera pour lui aussi long-tems qu'il lui plaîra de la retenir..... Au reste je vous recommande sur-tout l'affaire de la Religion, tâchez de la pousser selon votre instruction le plus loin que vous pourrez.
English translation (my own):
You will congratulate him [Bååth] on my behalf with the liveliest expressions you can find, of the sincerity of which I have no doubt that he will be persuaded, since he knows very well that it has been a long time since I wished him this post, of which he is so worthy. And since he still wishes to retain the office of my Governor General, I am very content, assuring him that it will be his for as long as he pleases to retain it..... Aside from this, I recommend you above all the matter of religion; try to push it according to your instruction as far as you can.

"Nous verrons pourtant ci-après que Christine lui ôta cette Charge, malgré lui."
"We will see later, however, that Kristina took this charge away from him, in spite of him [against his will]."
