The postscript:

With modernised spelling:

17 settembre.

Arckenholtz's transcript of the postscript (in his French translation):

English translation (my own):

The poor de Witts are dead. Either way, I believe them dead as innocent victims of the expiring freedom of the Republic. Time will make it known.

Dutch translation of the original (my own; I cannot tag it as such due to character limits in the tags):

17 september.

English translation of the original (my own):

September 17. — The poor de Witts are dead; and as it is, I believe them to be dead as innocent victims of the expiring liberty of the Republic. Time will tell.

Above: Kristina.

Note: The brothers Johan and Cornelis de Witt had just been tortured, murdered and even partially eaten by a pro-Orangist mob in The Hague on August 20, 1672.
