Kristina's letter to Azzolino, year 1657

Kristina wrote this letter to Cardinal Decio Azzolino in mid to late 1657.

The letter:

MON COUSIN,

Après avoir traité si souvent Votre Éminence en ami, vous trouverez bon que je vous donne part de la résolution que j'ai faite de m'en aller en France, et que je vous rende ce devoir en Cardinal, puisque je le dois à Votre Eminence plus que tout autre et que nos civilités ne peuvent être employées en aucun lieu plus justement qu'auprès de la personne du monde qui les mérite le mieux. Ce ne sont pas les obligations que j'ai à Votre Eminence qui me font juger si avantageusement de vous. Quelqu'infinies qu'elles soient, elles n'ont point de part en la justice que je vous rends, qui n'est pas corrompue par ma reconnaissance. Je ne prétends pas de m'acquitter à si bon marché des obligations que je vous professe. Je chercherai avec soin d'autres occasions pour m'en acquitter dignement et pour mériter de vous la continuation de votre estime. Cependant, agréez pour cette fois mes civilités et soyez persuadé qu'encore qu'il m'arriverait d'aller plus loin et en des climats plus éloignés que la France, que je porterai partout le souvenir d'une amitié aussi précieuse que la vôtre, que je désire de cultiver avec un soin digne du mérite de Votre Eminence. — Je vous conjure de me la conserver durant mon absence et de croire que je serai inviolablement, mon cousin,

Efter att så ofta ha behandlat Ers Eminens som en vän, skall Ni finna det bra att jag informerar Er om det beslut jag har fattat att resa till Frankrike, och att jag återlämnar denna plikt till Er som en kardinal, eftersom jag är skyldig Ers Eminens mer än någon annan som helst, och att våra artighetsbetygelser ingenstans kan användas mer rättvist än med den person i världen som bäst förtjänar dem. Det är inte de förpliktelser jag har gentemot Ers Eminens som får mig att döma Er så positivt. Hur oändliga de än är, så har de ingen del i den rättvisa jag ger Er, som inte förvanskas av min tacksamhet. Jag låtsas inte fullgöra så billigt de förpliktelser som jag bekänner till Er. My cousin,

After having so often treated Your Eminence as a friend, you will find it good that I inform you of the resolution I have made to go to France, and that I return this duty to you as a Cardinal, since I owe it to Your Eminence more than any other, and that our courtesies can nowhere be more justly used than with the person in the world who best deserves them. It is not the obligations I have to Your Eminence that make me judge you so favourably. However infinite they may be, they have no part in the justice I render to you, which is not corrupted by my gratitude. I do not pretend to discharge so cheaply the obligations which I profess to you. I will carefully seek other opportunities to fulfill it with dignity and to earn from you the continuation of your esteem. In the meantime, please accept my civilities for this time, and be persuaded that even if I happen to go further and in climates more distant than France, I will carry everywhere the memory of a friendship as precious as yours, which I desire to cultivate with a care worthy of Your Eminence's merit. — I beg you to preserve it for me during my absence and to believe that I will be inviolably, my cousin,

Note: In accordance with the nobility's ideals in the early modern era, kings and queens considered themselves siblings; when talking to someone of a lower rank than their own, they would refer to that person as "my cousin", regardless of whether or not they were related.
