Kristina's letter to Azzolino, year 1662

The letter:

J'ai reçu avec joie votre billet voyant une bonne disposition dans les esprits. J'ai obéi à un ordre de Sa Sainteté et j'ai écrit un second billet à l'ambassadeur pour le persuader d'arrêter le courrier afin que cette nouvelle n'aille pas en France devant que l'on y ait remédié. Je saurai tout ce qui se passe auprès de lui et je vois qu'il prend grande créance à mes conseils, et je vous promets d'en user d'une manière, qui fera connaître au pape et au Roi que je suis. Quant tout sera fini, le pape connaîtra que je lui ai rendu un service important en cette rencontre. Encore une fois, tâchez de lui persuader de se hâter à donner satisfaction à l'ambassadeur; car, si on ne le fait, je prévois de grands malheurs. Il faut sacrifier quelques-uns des Corses, et si l'on ne trouve les coupables, il faut punir même les innocents, pour faire voir qu'on ne les protège pas et qu'on n'a pas usé d'artifice pour les sauver. Ce que je dis vous paraîtra terrible, mais à des maux extrêmes il faut appliquer des remèdes de même.

Quand je vous pourrai parler, je vous dirai mes sentiments. Cependant je parlerai prophétiquement, et vous dirai qu'ils arriveront des maux infinis, si l'on ne donne satisfaction à l'ambassadeur, mais une satisfaction si entière qu'il ne puisse demander une plus grande sans être injuste.

Voilà mon sentiment, et je crois servir le [pape] en le lui déclarant.

Swedish translation (my own):

Jag har tagit emot Er biljett med glädje, och ser jag en god stämning i människors sinnen. Jag har lydt en befallning från Hans Helighet och skrivit en andra biljett till ambassadören för att övertala honom att stoppa posten så att denna nyhet inte skulle gå till Frankrike förrän den åtgärdats. Jag kommer att veta allt som händer med honom och jag ser att han tar stor ära för mina råd, och jag lovar Er att jag skall använda det på ett sätt som kommer att göra känt för påven och för kungen vem jag är. När allt är över kommer påven att veta att jag har gjort honom en viktig tjänst i detta möte. Försök än en gång att övertala honom att skynda att ge ambassadören tillfredsställelse; ty om det inte görs, förutser jag stora olyckor. Vi måste offra några av korsikanerna, och om vi inte finner de skyldiga, så måste vi straffa även de oskyldiga, för att visa att vi inte skyddar dem och att vi inte har använt konstigheter för att rädda dem. Det vad jag säger verkar kanske fruktansvärt för Er, men för extrem ondska måste man tillämpa botemedel på samma sätt.

När jag kan tala med Er kommer jag att berätta om mina känslor. Men emellertid vill jag tala profetiskt och säga Er att oändliga ondska kommer att hända om ambassadören inte ges tillfredsställelse, utan en tillfredsställelse så fullständig att han inte kan begära en större utan att vara orättvis.

English translation (my own):

I have received your note with joy, seeing a good mood in people's minds. I have obeyed an order from His Holiness and written a second note to the ambassador to persuade him to stop the mail so that this news would not go to France until it was remedied. I will know everything that happens with him and I see that he takes great credit for my advice, and I promise you to use it in a way that will make known to the Pope and to the King who I am. When all is over, the Pope will know that I have rendered him an important service in this meeting. Once more, try to persuade him to hasten to give satisfaction to the ambassador; for, if it is not done, I foresee great misfortunes. We must sacrifice some of the Corsicans, and if we do not find the culprits, we must punish even the innocent, to show that we are not protecting them and that we have not used artifice to save them. What I am saying will seem terrible to you, but for extreme evils one must apply remedies in the same way.

When I can speak to you, I will tell you my feelings. In the meantime, I will speak prophetically and tell you that infinite evils will happen if the ambassador is not given satisfaction, but a satisfaction so complete that he cannot ask for a greater one without being unjust.

This is my feeling, and I believe I am serving the Pope by declaring it to him.
